Master of enamel art

I'm Eva Buksa

I studied at The Jewellery Department at Strzemiński Academy of Arts in Łódź and graduated with honours. I was primarily attracted to two branches of art: jewellery design and painting and I did two courses in this respect which lead to the award at MA degree (First Class Honours). I had once in a lifetime opportunity to be taught by prof. Andrzej Szadkowski in his jewellery studio.

Miniatures

My first encounter with enamel dates back to 1999 when I was doing a specialized course in jewellery. At the time my knowledge of enamel in general and enamel techniques in particular was next to nothing. It took me a couple of years to gather all the necessary information. I must admit that in fact I taught myself everything there is to know about enamel art by trial and error approach. In 2006, which marked a real watershed in my enamel education, I went to Barcelona in Spain to study at Escola Superior de Disseny i d'Art Llotja under dr Nuria Lopez Ribalta and prof. Andreu Vilasis. In 2013 I went to Russia and learnt “finift”- Russian classical enamel miniature painting technique with Valeri Vasilievich Suchov, renowned Fedoskino Master.

Enamel

In the initial phases of my initiation into enamel art I was drawn to cloisonné, plique-á-jour techniques, then I so-called “discovered” base-taille and ronde-bosse and later on I moved to moriage, musen and ginbari, which I began to utilize ever since. Some years ago I started painting enamel miniatures. From my perspective it is one of the most challenging of all enamel techniques, not only because it is time consuming and technically complicated but requiring a huge dose of painterly knowledge as well. Quite often after firing your piece in a kiln the colours turn out to be different from those intended and the final result can neither be corrected nor masked. What is more, even the smallest defects of base enamel such as pits, holes, dots can completely render portrait miniature worthless. I try to make use of all the known enamel techniques when dealing with watch dials. Executing them properly is a huge challenge for one's technical abilities.
The enamel miniature painting art has been approved by UNESCO Federal Council on an indicative list of the candidates for inclusion on the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (ICH) on 2nd December 2014.
